Have you ever been driving, using navigation, and suddenly your car’s touchscreen freezes completely? The map stops moving, touch inputs don’t register, and your music cuts out.
Infotainment system freezes are annoying, but they usually happen because the head unit’s RAM or temporary cache is overloaded. Here is how to fix it and prevent it from happening again.
1. Perform a Soft Reset on Your Car Stereo
Most drivers don’t realize that car head units are basically mini-computers running custom versions of Linux or Android. Just like your smartphone or PC, they need a reboot from time to time.
- The Fix: Depending on your car model (like Ford SYNC, Toyota Entune, or Honda Connect), you can usually force a reboot by pressing and holding the power/volume knob down for about 10 to 15 seconds until the screen goes black and the manufacturer logo reappears.
2. Forget and Re-Pair Your Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Connections
Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto rely heavily on a simultaneous Bluetooth and direct Wi-Fi connection between your phone and the car. If these connection profiles get corrupted, freezing and stuttering will occur.
- The Fix:
- Go to your phone’s Settings > Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, find your car’s system, and select Forget This Device.
- Go into your car stereo’s settings menu under “Connected Devices” and delete your phone profile.
- Turn off your car, restart it, and set up the pairing process completely from scratch.
3. Clear Background Apps on Your Phone
If your phone is running twenty heavy apps in the background while streaming music and running GPS over wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, the processor can overheat and cause lag or complete system freezes on the dashboard.
- The Fix: Swipe away unused apps from your recent apps tray before getting into your car, and ensure your phone isn’t trapped in a hot spot (like direct sunlight on a dashboard wireless charger).
Summary
Freezing screens are usually solved by a quick soft reset of your car stereo or clearing out corrupted connection profiles.
